This summer...

MCG Youth & Arts is offering an exciting opportunity for Pittsburgh area youth (grades 5-12) to create art in our world-class facility. Use state-of-the-art equipment and professional-grade materials to create one-of-a-kind works of art in our ceramics, photography, design, and digital art studios.

Program Offerings

Middle School

Three two-week sessions for students 10–13 years old, Monday–Friday, 9 a.m.–4 p.m. Students will work in three of our four studios every day creating a variety of projects.

High School

Three two-week sessions for students 14–18 years old, Monday–Friday,

1 p.m.–4 p.m. Each session is focused in one studio, with students spending three hours in one of our art-making studios

Kick off your shoes for summer and for this sculpting class where the focus will be creating realistic renderings of everyday objects such as shoes and sandals!  We will be looking at these complex objects and then break them down into their constituent parts to learn how to sculpt more realistically.

In this class, we will use art to connect to nature by painting “en plein air” and building outdoor environmental sculptures inspired by Andy Goldsworthy! We will also learn to make recycled paper and create sculptures using repurposed materials. Finally, students will learn a little about PA’s flora and fauna and make illustrations using printmaking techniques.

Anime Appreciation

We are jumping onto the pottery wheels this session!  Get ready to get messy as we learn the fundamentals of the pottery wheel. From wedging to shaping, these wheel projects are going to be a great introduction into the basics of pottery making. then we are going to glaze and fire these projects to create awesome works of art!

Sunshine and warm weather means it's time for true otaku to sit inside, watch anime, read manga, and create art! Learn about image editing, 3-D modeling, laser cutting and engraving, and more as we study the world's greatest art form.

Session III

July 26th- August 6th

Be ready for creatures to come up from the depths of your imagination as we create fantasy creatures on larger-formed sculptural vessels! We are going to be making large scale coil-built sculptures or vessels that break with tradition as we will be adding our own custom fantasy creatures to them.  These creatures will scale the enormous forms to create a scene or simple decorative elements.

In this class we will explore the beauty of the microscopic and telescopic world! We will use scientific photos (and our imaginations, of course) to illustrate and create creatures and worlds beyond our sight through drawing, painting, printmaking, and sculpture!
